It may be an understatement to say we live in uncertain times. Besides the banking crisis, automobile companies hanging by a thread, and high unemployment, many companies are folding their tents. Several small business in my neighborhood have recently closed; major companies such as Mervyn's and Circuit City have gone away. Nearly every day we hear about more layoffs by the thousands. California can't balance its budget and the state has begun handing out IOUs in place of payments.
If you are not directly affected by the turmoil, you are probably thinking about it. What can you do? Do you feel powerless? There is always room for optimism since we still live in the Land of Opportunity. It's still true today that most of the wealthiest people in the country got that way by owning their own business. I'm not suggesting that we all can go out and strike it rich by starting our own company. But a small business, operated from home with minimal expenses, can help provide a safety net in case something happens to our job or other source of income. Having your own business puts you in control of your destiny to a degree, depending on what you do and how well you do it.
Think of it this way. With your own business, your boss can't fire you. Whether or not you get "down-sized" is up to you. More thoughts to follow.
